[ He shrugs, but the technical side is a bit boring, so he puts more enthusiasm into the rest of what he says. ]
Buuut, yeah, see, that's the kind of attitude we need. You're on my team? That's what I'm looking for.
[ He nods, both to affirm what he says, and also to confirm her question. ]
But yeah, Jack. Handsome Jack, technically, but eh, who's keeping track? [ he is ] You're, uh... Grell. Right?

[she parrots his own words back to him almost carelessly. she's not calling anyone Handsome as a name, but he doesn't seem like the sort to go for Miss Sutcliffe. fair is fair.]
If I'm here, I suppose we are on the same team. Allies.

[ Regardless, Jack nods, and his smile twists up into a wry little smirk as his words are repeated to him. ]
Yep, or close enough. [ Because Jack doesn't exactly call anyone an ally these days... It's more like he sometimes trusts peoples' self-interest enough to not stab him in the back. ] So, if we're on the same team? Gotta ask. Your profile has some pretty interesting stuff on it.
[ Which isn't actually asking anything just yet, but he wants to see what she'll explain without more prompting. ]

[not that easy, Jack. she's not showing her whole hand, even to these people. they don't get the story until they've either pried it from her or earned it through their actions - she knows how humans take names and run with them.]
no subject
[ Which is likely exactly what she was expecting as an answer. Jack's gaze is definitely interested and appraising, but also slightly sharp. For all his bravado and self-importance, there is at least a part of it that's warranted, since he's not a fool. ]
Everything else? Can make a good guess. But those two- [ He wags a finger ] Those two are interesting.

[she knows that statement makes her sound suspicious. but she doesn't know how far she can trust him yet.]
Of course... [it's the right time to pivot just a bit away, looking off like she's contemplating something.] If you're dying to know, I'll give you one hint. Information for information.
[work for it, jack attack]

Less dying to know, more getting to know my people, for the record. If we're going to be killing, it's kinda useful to know just what we're working with here, babe.
[ But he also figures that's fairly apparent, so he adds: ]
But, fine, I get your drift. What are you so curious about?

[she doesn't look at him when she says these things, already feeling herself getting ready to defend her own lack of knowledge. there were still so many things she was running off just the technical definition of and guesswork, barely sleeping so she could slip into the parlor and give herself headaches in the quest to squint, press her face close, seeking to understand and read words on the glass device so she wasn't fumbling around so much.
it was painful, literally and figuratively, but while others slept she forced herself through it. now that she can see, she can do more of that questing for knowledge without the great strain. really, she needs to just see which sucker she can make sit down and answer many questions.]

[ Jack sounds genuinely surprised when Grell explains what she's interested in, but it at least gets some of that tension to drift out of his posture. He's someone with many more secrets than the brash personality would imply, though the mask might have implied it a bit more. Truth be told, he had vainly imagined that Grell might ask about that, but as such, it does make him a bit more receptive to her actual inquiries. ]
I mean, yeah, they're simple concepts to me, but half of the friggin' stuff here is simple, yet everyone is like "what the hell is a space station." Seriously. Are you from that Earth place too? Because it super sounds like it sucks.
[ It's definitely on Jack's list when he returns to Helios to track down Earth and start sending his enemies there, since from everything he knows, that would be a fate worse than death. ]
Buuuut, in order? Cliffnotes version is that programming is how you get all the tech working around here, hacking is exploiting weaknesses in how the former works, and Vault hunting— [ He pauses on that one, then gives a dismissive shrug. ] Eh, what a Vault is, that's a long story that I'm going to guess doesn't exactly matter here. But hunting it? Just boils down to a lot of murdering the people in your way. It's a unfathomable treasure or a powerful weapon. Take your pick on what you want to believe.
